We have some simple principles that we have found lead to success when marketing online. These include:

GO TO WHERE THEY ARE AT. Prior to contrary belief, if you build it they may not come. The most effective way to target potential consumers is to interact with them where they are at. This requires an understanding of the behaviours and traits of a typical online consumer. Whether it be Social networks like Facebook and Bebo, Micro‐blogging sites like twitter and Friendfeed, or interactive communities i.e. gaming sites or their favourite blog.

AUTHENTICITY. As we stated above, the typical online user has now become very tech savvy and very very cynical. Too many times we have seen marketing companies engage in an online space without a clear understanding of their target consumers. The net result is that consumers immediately assume you are selling them something and your message joins the rest of the advertising white noise. Authenticity is then the key. Always be open and honest with consumers and give them the ability to interact with the campaign and to give their feedback. Listening goes a long way. If a potential consumer feels like you are actually interested in what they have to say, then they are more inclined to listen to you.

EVANGELISTS. You can tell people over and over again until you are blue in the face about how amazing your product or service is, and it will never be as effective as the feedback from somebody they know.
